根據美聯社5日取得的法令影本，在工人的抗議聲中，海地已經為境內估計達2.9萬人的成衣工廠勞工，小幅地調高最低工資。

海地總統馬德立(Michel Joseph Martelly)、總理和一名監督勞工條件的內閣成員，簽署法令調高最低工資12.5%。這項法律在5月1日生效，而5日(週一)則是該法適用後的第一個工作天。

根據這項法律，海地勞工現在每個8小時的工作天，大約可賺5.11美元，遠遠不及成衣工人所要求的11.36美元。海地去年的通貨膨脹率是3.2%。

這些工廠在海地已存在數十年，最初是生產籃球，但現在轉為替北美的主要零售商生產T恤。海地人口中大約三分之二沒有正式工作，而成衣廠是他們少數能獲得正式收入的來源。

海地國會上次同意調高最低工資是在2009年，將每日最低工資從大約1.50美元調高至4.50美元。
