投手應踏觸於投手板上接受捕手的指示，不得跨於投手板或立於投手板之後方接受捕手之暗號。投手接受暗號後，並不受到不能退觸投手板的限制，但退離後並不能立即又踏觸投手板投球，裁判員對於此種情形的投球，可視為「突襲投球」（QUICK-RETURN PITCH）。投手退觸投手板時，必須將兩手放下置於身體之兩側。投手接受指示後，不得習慣性地或屢次退觸投手板。
